Airlines body bids farewell to paper tickets

From: Reuters
Published August 27, 2007

GENEVA (Reuters) - The global airlines body IATA said on Monday it had placed its last order for paper tickets, clearing the way for air travel to be based entirely on electronic ticketing from June 1 next year.

"In just 278 more days, the paper ticket will become a collector's item," said Giovanni Bisignani, director general of the International Air Transport Association. The changeover from paper would not only cut airlines' costs by $9 for every traveller but would also mean the industry -- criticized by environmentalists for its part in global warming -- would save 50,000 mature trees a year, he added.Bisignani did not say whether the $9 in cost savings would or should be passed on to passengers.Based in Geneva, IATA represents more than 240 airlines which operate 94 percent of scheduled international flights.

Non-IATA airlines, mainly low-cost carriers like the Irish Ryanair and the British Easyjet, already have a paper-free ticket system where travellers are registered in computers and present only an identity document at check-in.

IATA launched its drive for so called "e-ticketing" just over three years ago and now 84 percent of travellers on IATA carriers fly without paper tickets.

The airlines body says China, one of the fastest-growing markets for air travel and host to next year's Olympic Games, is heading to be the first country in the world to operate an entirely paper-free ticketing system by the end of this year.

If you are on a short holiday, you may be relieved to hear that English is widely spoken in Fiji - but trying a few local phrases always goes down well.

Spa & Health Club Design

With the increasing understanding of the importance of exercise, has also come the understanding that the old fashioned gym like Rocky might have used, upstairs over the pool hall, has given way to places designed to attract the upper scale clientelle of today.

Ms. Castillo has carefully collected a set of photographs of newly built spa and health clubs from around the world. Literally from all over the world: Australia, Vienna, Canada, China, all over Europe. These spa's represent what the best architects are doing in this area. The book is an idea book for people interested in the area. This would include no only architects, but people like hotel management, spa operators, or even the home owner looking to put in his own unit.

For me two points really stand out in these designs:

1. The integration of the new, almost exoctic spa into a standard hotel design, or perhaps fit into an existing building of any age or architecture.

2. The large use of water. This can be swiming pools, fountains, hot tubs or whatever. It seems that water is an integral part of the new spa.

Beautiful photographs carefully selected to illustrate what can be done.

Spa Design

Gone are the days when the Spa was a bare utilitarian swimming pool or perhaps a fitness center with rows of equipment designed by the Spanish Inquisition. This is a book showing the untimate in today's Spa's from all over Europe, all over the US, and from selected locations in India, Thailand, Japan and other countries.

To be sure, the Spa is still very water oriented. Here are the pools you'd expect, the hot tubs, thermal baths, but also reflecting pools, fountains -- And yes, even some of the inquisition equipment.

More important though, here are the most advanced building designs, artistic but still waterproof, lighting that is a part of the design, all arranged to create an ambiance that serves to relax and invigorate the visitor. All of this is depicted with supurb photography, high quality printing on heavy weight paper, and traditional sewn binding with headbands. This is an idea book based on today's most advanced designs.

Salons and Spas: The Architecture of Beauty

Beauty is big business worldwide. This is most evident by noting the amazing transformation of what was once the corner "beauty shop" into the amazing spaces that are now called salons and day spas and are being designed by some of the world’s hottest designers and architects. Providing a serene atmosphere that pampers and relaxes is as important for success as the products and services these retreats offer. Clients’ demands are not just to look beautiful when they leave but also to feel beautiful when they are there.

The salons and spas that can provide this perceived sense of beauty prove to be the most successful. These pages provide an inside look at the most elegant and appealing spas to the hippest beauty shops. These new shops represent the high-end of interior design and architecture and the atmosphere is as important as the service. Spas and Salons features the design details of the best and newest beauty shops and spas on the block and uncovers, through interviews with the designers, what makes them so appealing, memorable, and desirable.

Use your phone number as a handout email address

Lifehacker, the Productivity and Software Guide

Having heard my wife give out her email address to yet another soccer coach at the start of the season, it hit me. What if you used your phone number as a handout email address?

Instead of spelling some haphazard email address, she could tell them: ""It is our phone number -- 5551234@gmail.com" and be done with it.

If you give this a try, you'll find that some email apps, like Gmail, won't allow you to include your entire phone number (area code and all) without adding a letter to the mix, but with Gmail, as long as you have fewer than 8 numbers, you're okay. While you wouldn't want to use this address for everything, it seems like a potentially perfect solution for situations like Dan described - you can hand out two pieces of contact info for the price of one.

With worries and stress sent away, what remains is a sense of well-being, island style.

Natural alpha-hydroxyl present in raw sugar cane gently polishes the skin, leaving the body smooth and moisturized with a more youthful appearance. Savor the sweet sensations of the South Pacific.

Island Body Wrap
A gentle, dry brush exfoliation prepares the skin for a massage with coconut oil, with essential vitamins and anti-oxidants. Hydrating the skin and detoxifying the system, this treatment naturally restores the body. A cooling smooth stone neck and facial massage, reducing any inflammation, complements this warming body wrap and persuades your mind and body to release any lingering tension.

Dilo and Aloe Body Wrap
This cooling treatment relieves the effects of dehydrated and sunburned skin. An aloe vera gel combined with the traditional Fijian dilo-nut remedy aids in faster recovery.

Fiji Facial
This hydrating skincare treatment alleviates the impact of tropical sun and sea. The combination of bioactive ingredients gently removes impurities, improves elasticity and nourishes skin. Includes a head and foot massage. Perfect with a body treatment or massage.

Hair and Scalp Therapy
Rediscover the South Pacific's legendary secret of building hair, vitamin-rich coconut oil. Lie back and relax under the gentle, rhythmic touch of dancing fingers. Coconut oil stimulates your scalp to soften, nourish and strengthen your hair in a caring massage of scalp, neck and shoulders. Using the best nature has to offer, Pure Fiji natural shampoo and conditioner then leave your hair soft and revitalized.

Fiji Botanical Fusion Foot Therapy

This ritual begins with a soothing coconut milk foot soak and exfoliating sugar rub. A rich clay mask blended with our organic garden's hibiscus and herbs is then applied to the feet. While the mask sets, the lower legs are massaged with tropical nut oil, promoting further circulation. Finally, a moisturizing, coconut butter foot massage and steamed towel wrap soften and revitalize weary feet. Delight in life's daily journeys.
